2025.04.-09. Gandaulogy Lands in Japan: Dr. Liang-Kung Chen Joins Forces with TSMC to Build a Cross-Border Smart Longevity Community

The Taipei Municipal Gan-Dau Hospital has achieved remarkable success in its “Next-Generation Healthy Longevity Livable Community” initiative. Supported by the TSMC Charity Foundation and following a year of meticulous planning, Hospital President Dr. Liang-Kung Chen led his team to introduce the “Gandaulogy” model—also known as the Taiwan Integrated Geriatric Effectiveness Registry (TIGER)—onto the international stage. This landmark project officially launched in Kikuyo-machi, Kumamoto—home to TSMC’s Japanese plant—with a formal agreement signed by Kumamoto University President Shinji Ogawa, Kikuyo-machi Mayor Yoshimoto, and TSMC Charity Foundation Chairwoman Sophie Chang, marking a new chapter in Taiwan-Japan collaboration on geriatric medicine.
Dr. Liang-Kung Chen emphasized that addressing the challenges of an ultra-aging society requires moving beyond simple caregiving toward social and community revitalization to create holistic solutions. Kikuyo-machi has now implemented a healthy longevity program for its senior residents, incorporating multi-faceted interventions such as cognitive training, exercise, nutritional guidance, and health seminars. Dr. Chen also shared Taiwan’s successful recruitment models, which utilize community events and grassroots networking to effectively engage seniors and boost participation.
In the realm of smart healthcare, Dr. Chen is leveraging Taiwan’s strengths in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The project plans to utilize handheld ultrasound devices donated by the TSMC Charity Foundation to assess the muscle quality of community seniors, using AI algorithms to track health changes over time. Dr. Chen is currently spearheading the creation of a musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging database, aiming to leverage AI for precise monitoring and preservation of elderly physical function. He has extended a warm invitation to Kumamoto University to join this cross-border research effort. Furthermore, this model has evolved into a heart-warming “Healthy Longevity Triangle Strategy,” establishing a cross-institutional medical network that ensures both TSMC employees working abroad and their families in Taiwan receive comprehensive health support.
The core philosophy of “Gandaulogy” lies in developing tailored goals based on the unique characteristics of each community. With the full support of Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) President Wei-Ming Chen, this successful model has gradually expanded to various TVGH branch hospitals, such as the “員榮學苑” in Su’ao and Yuanshan. From hospice care in remote areas and intergenerational vision health to smart communities built with tech giants, Dr. Liang-Kung Chen has masterfully bridged medical resources with technology. Through these efforts, the experience has transcended Taipei, bringing a transformative vision of healthy longevity to Eastern Taiwan and Kyushu, Japan.
